The Former President's System of Consequences and Incentives

The ex-president's voracious appetite for revenge has rapidly transformed into a structured system. Over the past year, the leader's anger and caprices have assumed the guise of government actions in ways analogous to earlier dictatorial systems. Justice department personnel who resist his demands are immediately dismissed and succeeded by loyalists. Critical figures who question him risk indictment, court proceedings and punishment. Critics have been designated under presidential memoranda as “hostile to national interests”, “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist”, and threatened with prosecution as “terrorists”.

Federal Agencies Remade

Each instance involving targeting of political opponents and leniency for supporters displays its own distinct characteristics. Yet, despite their individual form, they represent expressions of what has developed as a systematic approach. These episodes are not isolated. Trump's purge of DoJ prosecutors and FBI officials, coupled with his appointment of supporters in key roles, commenced quickly, promptly developed a pattern, and has now been shaped into a regime. DoJ and the FBI have been remade into ideological organizations under the president's explicit direction to implement his demands. Wrongdoing has been rendered standard. This is the apparatus of revenge.

Leadership is preoccupied with targeting the President's alleged enemies than they are with safeguarding our country's safety.

Internal the Structure

The beginnings of this system has been exposed in the court filing of multiple previous senior FBI officials filed in September in the judicial system in DC against agency head a senior appointee and justice department head Pam Bondi for unlawful firing in “a campaign of retribution against them for what administration figures considered to be a failure to show adequate devotion”. According to the filing that Brian Driscoll, the ex- interim leader, describes a discussion in which Patel “publicly acknowledged the impropriety of his behavior”.

Driscoll had tried to protect FBI agents from being dismissed, the lawsuit claims. The director advised him that “they” – understood by him to be the White House and justice department – had instructed him to remove anyone who they determined as having been involved in a law enforcement case against Trump. The complaint goes on: “The director stated that he had to fire the people his superiors told him to dismiss, because his capacity to retain his own position depended on the dismissal of the officials who handled matters involving the leader. He explained that there was no way he or him could do to halt these or any other firings, because ‘the agency sought to incarcerate the chief in jail and he remembers.’” Once he informed Patel he was breaking the bureau's own regulations, Patel supposedly said “he knew that and he was aware the essence of the summary firings were probably illegal”.

Broad Effects

Following the director's alleged acknowledgment to Driscoll, the Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau have been gutted and redirected for the administration's system of punishment. Six of the bureau's senior executives were fired or pushed out in the first days of the administration. Approximately 4,500 lawyers at the justice department have taken a “early exit scheme”. At least seven federal prosecutors, including those in the New York office, quit in protest over what they considered as ideological pressure in withdrawing the legal action against the city leader, a political figure, in as a trade for his cooperation with the administration's Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrests of immigrants. The ethics division of DoJ, which handles ethical violations, has been diminished to minimal staff. The rights protection unit has been devastated: seventy percent of its staff has departed. 33% of executives at the department have resigned. The unit implementing ecological regulations has seen departures of half its supervisors.

Favors and Sanctions

Concerning the Adams case, the interim prosecutor for the southern district of New York, Danielle Sassoon, stepped down in protest against what she described as the “exchange”. A key figure, the president's “enforcement chief,” appeared as the enforcer with Adams on a media outlet to declare: “If he doesn't come through, I'll reappear in New York City.”. And, another figure, previously the acting deputy attorney general and a former Trump attorney, who brokered the arrangement, was given an judicial position, a possible pathway to the supreme court.

His exemption for crimes perpetrated while in office, granted by the extraordinary ruling of the Republican majority on the supreme court, thus preventing his legal action over the political violence and safeguarding his political viability for the presidential race, is the cornerstone on which he stands to defend his supporters. Given this protection, he has been liberated to enable misconduct. The effect of the judicial ruling saturates his government and the political party thoroughly. The court matter has metastasized.
